A high-end manufacturer of critical engine and structural components for aerospace\u00a0companies, oil field operators, and high-speed packaging machines, Kolhapur-based\u00a0Datta Enterprises builds customized parts for its clients. As bespoke manufacturing\u00a0typically consists of small batch cycles with many variants, building such parts requires\u00a0high precision. This naturally calls for a Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) platform\u00a0that can machine complex parts on a sustained basis with minimal errors.
\nGetting set with CAMWorks<\/strong>
\nPoints out Shailendra Bhosle, Partner, Datta Enterprises, \u201cThe parts that we manufacture are\u00a0extremely complex, involving custom machine alloys like titanium, heat resistant alloys and\u00a0aluminum. Our clients come to us because few in the market are capable of doing what we do.\u201d
\n\"CAM3\"<\/a>To ensure smooth production of these parts, Datta Enterprises had tried different CAM products,\u00a0but found little uccess with the solutions on offer. \u201cWe required a CAM software that was capable\u00a0of integrating and programming all the achines on our floor. We also required programming of\u00a0multiple axis components, which is highly complex.\u201d
\nThree months ago, Datta Enterprises decided to license Geometric\u2019s highly successful CAMWorks\u00a0platform, CAMWorks\u00ae. Datta Enterprises says there were several reasons behind this decision.\u00a0\u201cFirstly, they had a local team, which could support us. Secondly, we required a lot of customization,\u00a0which they were willing to provide. Thirdly, their people are very focused. They do not challenge us\u00a0when we have a problem. Rather, they focus on the issue.\u201d
\nEnabling faster design cycles<\/strong>
\nDatta Enterprises chose Geometric for its ability and willingness to customize CAMWorks to support\u00a0design automation. Previously, Datta used to get CAD files and 3D models from its clients. This data\u00a0was then used to design the fabricated part \u2013 a process that involved multiple rounds of\u00a0consultation with specialist resources, and only after which the manufacturing could begin.
\n\"CAM2\"<\/a>
\nGeometric devised an in-built Design Automation module that was integrated into SolidWorks, the\u00a0CAD program chosen by Datta Enterprises. The module essentially automates the process of die\u00a0design so as to simplify and speed up the transition to fabrication. A client CAD file could now be\u00a0imported into SolidWorks environment and based on that, design of the die is initiated. The design\u00a0data can then be automatically sent to CAMWorks, where tool paths are auto-generated.\u00a0Once these have been verified by the user, the part can be sent for machining. The flow chart\u00a0describes the automation process.
\nDatta Enterprises is in the process of implementing this module and stands to gain multiple benefits.\u00a0The design automation process ensures consistency in the design quality and due to obviation of\u00a0repeated processes, nearly 70% saving can be achieved on the lengthy design time-cycle. Reliance\u00a0on individual specialists in the team can also be reduced as best-practice data can now be stored\u00a0within the system itself. Lastly, the module has been configured in such a way that even a new user\u00a0can intuitively use the software.
\nLooking ahead: great expectations<\/strong>
\nAlthough Datta’s team is in the midst of training on the CAMWorks platform, it is clear that they\u00a0have high expectations from the software. \u201cWe believe that we will be able to service our customers\u00a0better through greater manufacturing accuracy afforded by the platform. We also expect to\u00a0improve our business flexibility and take up more complex jobs\u201d, points Bhosle. The company\u00a0expects that CAMWorks will help them optimize the production process and ensure faster customer\u00a0turnarounds. \u201cCAMWorks brings in greater predictability into a job, which is very important\u201d,\u00a0he adds.
\nThe smooth experience, thus far with CAMWorks has also motivated Datta Enterprises to think\u00a0ahead and envision integrating the entire solution with their company-wide ERP. This will ensure\u00a0automation of the complete work flow \u2013 from order booking to design creation and generation of\u00a0fabrication pipeline.
