Your views about the Indian Machine Tool Industry?
The Indian machine tool industry is vibrant and in a high growth trajectory, thanks to the robust growth in manufacturing sector. The manufacturing sector is aided by the ever-increasing domestic demand due to steady GDP growth, government policy support such as ‘Make in India’ and investment in the sector by both domestic and foreign institutions. The machine tool industry, including production and imports is expected to grow from Rs 16,900 crore to Rs 30,000 crore by 2022-23. The consumption is driven by sectors such as aerospace, automotive, engineering and die & mould. This high double-digit growth of the Indian machine tool industry calls for improving the supply chain efficiency of the sub assembly suppliers, who are ramping up to meet the increased demand. With the increased capacity, the component/sub assembly suppliers are exploring the export market which is a healthy sign for the industry.

The top trends that you observe in the industry…
The top trends that I witness are:

  • The recent depreciation of the Indian currency is putting additional burden of capital expenditure on the importers of key components of machine tool industry.
  • The increased domestic demand is attracting global players to set up their own base to cater to the needs of Indian industry.
  • The Indian machine tool manufacturers are now emphasising on quality and reliability which should pave way for increased exports from India.

I would like to add that the machine tool manufacturer who is focused on meeting the demand of the industry with respect to cost reduction and increase in productivity, will be the winner in the long term.

What are the new machine tool technologies that are gaining acceptance in manufacturing industry?
|Most of the machine tool manufacturers are working on digital technology. I see companies adopting higher level of automation as part of standard feature in machine tools to gain productivity benefits. The users will certainly see the advantage in multitasking machines, say 5 axis milling machines while augmenting their capacity. Additive manufacturing—metal 3D printing would play a key role in manufacturing machine parts in the near future.

How do you see the future of Indian machine tool industry?
Manufacturing has emerged as one of the high growth sectors in India. Machine tool industry derives demand from the manufacturing sector, and I am quite upbeat on the accelerated growth prospects of the machine tool industry. The government policy and initiatives would drive manufacturing contribution from 17% to 25% GDP. Machine tool produced in India is about 50% of consumption and its share would increase to 60% by 2022-23.
